Youthful Vigor

If these high school kids are any indication, youth activism is making a determined comeback — even in Johnson County. This past summer, a group of students at St. Thomas Aquinas High School organized a rally for peace along Quivira Road. But, c'mon — kids today are apathetic, more inclined to sit at home surfing MySpace than take a political stand, right? Wrong. The rally brought out 130 anti-war protesters, some with peace signs painted in a fashion normally reserved for die-hard sports fans — on their bare chests. Others carried signs more artistic than a homecoming float. This afternoon from 3 to 6, the students are schooling their apathetic elders with a second demonstration that they hope will be even bigger than the first. Join the festive crew at 95th Street and Quivira in Overland Park and bring a canned food item for Harvesters. And if you're really hip, add the group as your friend on MySpace: myspace.com/kc_protest.
