Woolly Woolly

Throughout the year, the American Royal offers plenty of opportunities for city slickers to brush up on the scent of horse apples and see what a steak looks like when it's still part of a living, breathing animal. Occasionally, the livestock on display at the Cowtown event complex is a bit more exotic. This weekend, for example, the Midwest Alpaca Owners and Breeders Association brings its annual free show of South American camelids to Hale Arena (1701 American Royal Drive, 816-513-4000). Unlike the dromedary — their desert-dwelling Arabian cousins — alpacas, natives of South America, are fuzzy and look like little llamas. They are raised for their woolly fur. Feel some and visit with some of the 200 farmers, here with alpacas and related products for demonstration or sale, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. See mopaca.org.
