Who's That Girl?

For a half-century now, one plastic blonde has represented style, sex appeal and so much more to millions of little girls (and little girls at heart). But Barbie's reign as queen of the toy box hasn't gone uncontested. Hence, the nuanced analysis presented through a series of activities, including the 6:30 p.m. lecture on Thursday, March 11, by feminist author Courtney E. Martin at the Kansas City Public Library's Plaza Branch (4801 Main), presented in conjunction with the Barbie exhibit on display through December at the Toy & Miniature Museum of Kansas City (5235 Oak, 816-333-9328). Tonight's free 6:30 p.m. screening (with discussion afterward) of the documentary Barbie Nation at UMKC's University Center (5000 Holmes, Room 106) contains adult content and is not recommended for young viewers. But the shoe-charm bracelet and paper-doll workshops (March 13 and 27, respectively) at the museum are good for all ages. For more Barbie-related events, see toyandminiaturemuseum.org.
