WHITE GIRL'S OVERBITE

Otto Preminger's moody, melodramatic 1944 noir, Laura, is more or less your typical boy-meets-girl love story — except that the boy here is a laconic police lieutenant (Dana Andrews) who falls in love with the portrait of a beautiful socialite (Gene Tierney) after she's had her face removed by a shotgun blast. He's going to be seeing a whole team of therapists after this, but first he must piece together the victim's back story and identify her murderer among such suspects as her incorrigible playboy fiancé (Vincent Price, at right, with Tierney), her aunt (Judith Anderson) and her smug mentor (Clifton Webb). Laura screens tonight at 7 at Tivoli Cinemas (4050 Pennsylvania, 816-561-5222) as part of the Film Noir Showcase series presented by the Tivoli and the UMKC Department of Communication Studies. Admission costs $3; the film is free for UMKC students and staff with valid ID.
