Westport Flea Market

Hours: 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Sunday-Thursday, 11 a.m.-12 a.m. Friday and Saturday

Not too long ago, KC suffered a terrible fright when this Westport gem was said to be in danger of being torn down and replaced by a Hooters. Luckily, local restaurateur Joe Zwiller (Joe Joe’s Italian Eatery, Joe’s Burger Joint) saved midtown from substandard buffalo wings and chicks in orange nylon shorts when he bought the Westport Flea Market. Zwiller didn’t change a thing; the place still serves the best burgers in town and an impressive array of beers; tons of video and parlor games remain, and vendors still sell their eclectic wares on weekends in the real flea market that surrounds the dining room. The Flea, an unlikely live-music venue books bands every Sunday night, and boasts one of the most popular trivia nights in town (Wednesdays at 8) and karaoke with a backing band.

Restaurant Details

For well over two decades, this iconic tavern and flea market in Westport has served hamburgers, cheeseburgers, fries and other intoxicating bar food. Fans don’t seem to mind the neon beer signs, the uncomfortable tables, the noise or the Keno monitor. They also happily ignore the grungy-looking, often-closed stalls ringing the dining room, stacked floor-to-ceiling with so-called collectibles. The real treasures here are those burgers and the inexpensive daily dinner specials. — Charles Ferruzza
