The Prids

The Prids are all about it — love, that is, and the pain that comes with it. Built around core duo David Frederickson and Mistina Keith (who started out as friends, got married and then got divorced while keeping the band together), the Prids are firmly rooted in early Cure and Joy Division with an ear toward the future. As students at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, Frederickson and Keith heard what was good about goth and postpunk and had the chutzpah to kick it up a notch. Layer by intricate layer, they began composing spaced-out, lugubrious bedroom odes to love. Now, it's hard to believe that these composed adults have always been Midwestern punks at heart, complete with homemade tattoos and hand-sewn clothes. Moving their base of operations to the Northwest, they have released five discs (two full-lengths and three EPs) of orchestral pop since 2000, the latest and best being 2007's EP Something Difficult. Tightening up through grueling tour schedules, the band has reached top form, even bouncing back from a disastrous van wreck last summer.
