The Other V-Day

This time of year, thoughts of love and romance fill people's heads. But love — or what's misperceived as love — can have a violent side. Every February, the nonprofit corporation V-Day shows films and stages performances to raise money and awareness to curb violence against women and girls worldwide. The Women's Center at the University of Missouri-Kansas City is among local groups taking part in the mission. V-Day founder Eve Ensler's sassy, sad and sweet ode to lady parts, The Vagina Monologues, caps UMKC's V-Day festivities. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. tonight and tomorrow at Pierson Auditorium (5000 Holmes, inside the school's University Center). Tickets cost $10 for students and $15 for nonstudents in advance ($12 and $17 at the door). Proceeds benefit the UMKC Violence Prevention and Response Project and V-Day's 2010 spotlight campaign. For more information, call 816-235-1638 or see umkc.edu/womenc.
