Rituals of a Geisha

Dressing layer upon layer, donning a kimono and tying an obi are parts of the elaborate process that transforms a woman into a geisha. But this ritual is just one facet of geisha life, a topic that fascinates Kansas City artist Robyn Nichols. A real geisha provides another dimension to Nichols' annual art show, from 6 to 9 tonight at The Pearl (1818 McGee, 816-474-1731). While a geisha and her assistant demonstrate the dressing ritual in the background, a vintage kimono collection and silver jewelry, made by Nichols, will be on display. In Nichols' 26 years of exhibitions, her art and the accompanying entertainment have taken on such themes as a Clue murder mystery and "Have You Been Naughty or Nice?" This year's free exhibit may be her most exotic to date. "This is really more about beauty and art as beauty," Nichols says of the show. "It's live art, you might say.
