Remembering Bird

Sax giant Charlie "Yardbird" Parker died in 1955, but the Mutual Musicians Foundation (1823 Highland) brings him back this weekend with the Bird Lives Festival. The Kansas City native played the local scene in the early days of the Mutual Musicians Foundation, which first opened its doors in 1930. If Parker were still bebopping around, he would turn 89 today. To honor him, the foundation features two outdoor stages of jazz and blues from 2 to 8 p.m. After 8, the party moves inside, with jamming through the night until 6 a.m. Sunday's festivities include a 1 p.m. saxophone salute and a 2 p.m. chicken banquet and jazz jam. For more information, call the foundation at 816-471-5212.
