Pucking Awesome

Three decades have passed since the National Hockey League's Kansas City Scouts played in this town, but local fans continue to watch live hockey, irrespective of the setting and the league in which the team plays. After following the now-defunct Blades at Kemper Arena, local puck enthusiasts drive to Independence to watch minor-league hockey. The commute is worth it. The Independence Events Center (19100 East Valley View Parkway), home of the Missouri Mavericks of the Central Hockey League, is a terrific venue. Best of all, the Mavericks are competitive, earning a playoff berth in their expansion season. In the home opener for their second season, the Mavericks go up against the bizarrely named Odessa Jackalopes at 7:05 p.m. Tickets run $14 to $35. Call 816-252-7825 for information.— Chris Rasmussen
