NewEar Contemporary Ensemble wades into its 18th season with a program featuring a contest winner and a definitive classic. Peiying Yuan , the student winner of NewEar's first composers' competition, airs her "5 Elements." Also on the program: works by iconoclastic Dutch composer Roderik de Man and the intriguing Americans Bonnie Miksch and Edward Jacobs. The night's marquee performance is Toru Takemitsu's piano trio "Between Tides," the late composer's most elegiac, hypnotic work. The concert starts at 8 p.m. at All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church (4501 Walnut). Peiying Yuan talks with the audience at 7:15. Tickets cost $20 ($10 for students); see newear.org or call 816-235-6222.— Scott Wilson
