MultiLingual Poetry

His name may sound Spanish, but poet Craig Santos Perez hails from the Pacific island of Guam. The poems in his new book, From Unincorporated Territories, reflect his island upbringing with the imagery of cliffs, ocean, tropical flowers and, of course, tourist hotels. Through English, Spanish and words traditional to the Chamorro people, Perez traces the lasting influence — and lasting oppression — of Spain's colonization of Guam. Tonight, the poet reads some of his works aloud at the Central Branch of the Kansas City, Missouri, Public Library (14 West 10th Street). A reception precedes the 6:30 p.m. presentation, and a book signing follows the reading. Call 816-701-3407 or see to RSVP for this free event.
