Mrs. Bildungsromanson

The Johnson County Museum (6305 Lackman in Shawnee) has picked out a few classic movies to go with its exhibit Coming of Age in Johnson County: 1960-1976. Sure, none of the series' titles is set in the Midwest, and a couple (Psycho, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest) are less about the dawn of adulthood than about the twilight of mental stability. But commentary on youth's bogus optimism and the crippling plastic morality of middle age doesn't get any better (or more resonant to its generation) than The Graduate. Mike Nichols' bitterly observant 1967 farce, which launched Dustin Hoffman's career, remains the movies' sharpest evocation of the question "Now what?" See it at the museum today at 1 p.m. Tom Poe, who teaches film and media at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, will stick around to talk about the film and its impact on culture. Your $5 donation to the museum gets you in. See or call 913-715-2570 for a schedule of other screenings.
