When it comes to sheer effort, this California-based restaurant chain wins points for at least attempting to encompass a global culinary landscape. The menu offers Chinese chicken salad, hibachi salmon, fettuccine, shrimp Creole, quiche, fish and chips, and patty melts. The less complicated dishes (including pot roast, meatloaf and sandwiches) are often tastier than the international creations. The portions are all-American — think big — and the service is snappy. Better yet, Mimis serves breakfast right up until closing, although waffles and eggs Benedict are served only until noon on weekdays (2 p.m. on weekends).
