Little Black Backpacks

Kids are notorious traders, swapping baseball cards, toys, video games and even candy in serious prepubescent deal making. But the trade-off at today's Backpack BBQ is that area children get backpacks filled with school supplies; the grown-up donors get a hot dog, chips, a cold drink and the satisfaction of having helped the community. The second-annual Backpack BBQ, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Richard C. Green Sr. YMCA in Raytown (10301 East 350 Highway), provides study-aid resources for the Don Bosco Center's Project Yes. Spokeswoman Toni King hopes to gather backpacks — new or gently used, any color or size — as well as school supplies, including index cards, highlighters, binders, notebooks and graph paper. If you bring only school supplies, you'll still get a hot dog. "We need everything," King says. For more information, see At last year's event, 50 people brought about 25 backpacks; this year, King hopes to double that number. And for a freshly grilled hot dog, it's a pretty good trade.
