Americans have practiced the hobby of autograph collecting since the early 1800s. Possessing a signed letter — or maybe a signed book — provides a sense of closeness to the scrawler, who tends to be famous or somehow celebrated for personal or professional achievements. Grab a Sharpie and an event program, if not a glossy 8-by-10, to collect a few John Hancocks from automotive daredevils at the Kansas Speedway (400 Speedway Boulevard in Kansas City, Kansas), where motors rev for the NASCAR Nationwide Series Kansas Lottery 300, starting at 2:30 p.m. The first 300 fans in line at 9 a.m. can attend a special autograph session with drivers from 11 a.m. to noon, in the Speedway's Sprint FanWalk. During the day's high-velocity competition, the morbid (and potentially lucrative) aspect of autograph collecting could become all too real. For tickets, call 866-460-7223. — Crystal K. Wiebe
