Freeze tag is way more fun than jogging.

WED 6/4

People are at their best -- and happiest -- when they are chasing after one another. That's according to Kate Schurman, the 23-year-old law-office manager who heads up the Tag Institute. Schurman has taken it upon herself to start a weekly tag night in Mill Creek Park (47th Street and J.C. Nichols Parkway) called Everybody Freeze! "I don't really like to exercise at the gym, because it's expensive," she explains. "And I don't really like to run to go nowhere. Some friends and I were talking about how when you're a kid at recess, you just run around and play tag. You don't need to be at any kind of skill level, which is more important for some of us than for others."

Schurman and her pals play freeze tag, but people who want to play other kinds of tag -- TV tag, for example -- should just say so. For information, call 816-931-8114. The fun begins Wednesdays at 7 p.m. -- Gina Kaufmann

KC Blues
Rugby Recruiting

The Kansas City Blues' summer season just started, and the successful rugby team is looking for some hard-nosed masochists to join the team. Experience isn't necessary, but the ability to enter full combat sans helmet is a must. The team practices twice a week, aiming to qualify for the National Sevens Championship in Pennsylvania -- a feat the Blues accomplished three years ago. Practices are from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at Minor Park, near Holmes and Red Bridge Road. For more information, call 816-960-1281 to speak with the captain (not the coach -- this is a Brit's game, remember?). -- Sarah Smarsh

Bowl to a Beat

Americana lovers ought to be in ecstasy over the hybrid of two cultural phenomena at Disco Bowling in Lawrence. At Royal Crest Lanes (933 Iowa Street), bowlers do their thing on lanes bathed in swirling mirror-ball lights while everything from Donna Summer to the Donnas throbs through the speakers. But the Jaybowl at the Kansas Union (1301 Jayhawk Boulevard) outdoes that with Techno Bowling, boasting all aforementioned amenities plus glow-in-the-dark lanes. The drawback: No smokes or brew allowed. The black lights might induce a drunken feeling, though. Disco Bowling runs from 9 p.m. to midnight on Fridays and costs each bowler $3.65 a game. For information, call 785-842-1234. Techno Bowling runs from 8 to 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and costs $2.50. Don't forget an extra couple of bucks for the groovy shoes. For more information, call 785-864-3545.-- Smarsh
