Ice Breakin’

“Goofy to too damn serious” is how spoken-word artist 331 describes the range of the lip servers who frequent the weekly Dramatic Art in Rhythm open mics at The Hangout (3611 Broadway, 816-931-9200). The gathering has spawned a wide-ranging community of poets, lyricists, songwriters and visual artists. “We’re not cliquish or anything. We’re just family,” explains 331, a local poet who represented Kansas City in the 2003 national slam team. “When you come through those doors, you’re welcome. Everything negative is left outside.” He and his partner, Priest — a spoken-word duo known as the Recipe — break the ice each week with memorized pieces cadenced to the rhythms of hand drums and occasional live ensembles. Wordsmiths interested in joining the Dramatic Art in Rhythm lineup can check out or stop by The Hangout from 7 to 9 p.m. Tonight’s featured performer is neo-soul singer TBlaze, with an open mic to follow. Admission costs $5.
