Film Farmers

After 17 years of celebrating local films, Lawrence's annual Harvest of Arts Film Festival has built up too much legacy to go about changing its silly name. Beyond the gassiness in that "of arts," the name implies that the arts themselves are reaped and sown in some predictable manner instead of being arrived at through mysterious inspiration alongside the requisite dogged work. But however it's getting its arts, the HOA crew usually manages an impressive yield. This year, as always, organizers have assembled a two-hour program of shorts by local filmmakers, carefully culled from a much larger crop. (Last year, there were more than 70 entries.) Tonight's noncompetitive, anything-can-happen screening of this year's best entries begins at 7 p.m. at The Granada (1020 Massachusetts, Lawrence, 758-842-1390). The event is free, which is nice — when you know a harvest's quantity but haven't heard any word yet on its annual quality, it's hard to say how much you should pony up.
