Ecstatic Exposito

The Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art (Johnson County Community College, 12345 College Boulevard in Overland Park, 913-469-3000) celebrates autumn with glorious views of hue by a trio of colorists dedicated to abstraction. For decades, Stanley Whitney (a 1968 Kansas City Art Institute graduate) struggled to find his own path to color, away from the Color Field giants, whose works he found formless. He found his answer in structure. His jazzy grids of color are constructed in a process that he likens to "call and response," wherein the color of each block dictates the next. Warren Isensee's razor-sharp concentric rectangles dazzle the eye with intense color and repetitive line. Bart Exposito's canvases recall the swooping geometry and nostalgic palette of retro advertising graphics — no wonder Charles Saatchi is a fan. Winter is coming, bleak and black. Go fill your eyes with the color of Ecstatic Structure before the group exhibit closes December 19. Admission is free.— Grace Suh
