Bring It On

Cheerleading has come a long way since the days of sis-boom-bah, matching hair ribbons and vinyl pompoms. Modern-day stunting is complex and high-risk. Remember Southern Illinois University cheerleader Kristi Yamaoka? She suffered a fractured vertebra after hitting her head when she fell from a human pyramid. Carried out on a stretcher, she kept performing her routine. Yeah, she had spirit. (Still does — she’s all better now.) See other spirited feats of gymnastic talent today at the U.S. Finals Cheerleading Competition at Municipal Auditorium (301 West 13th Street, 816-513-5000) when all-star, school and recreation cheer and dance squads compete for regional gold. Admission runs from $11 (kids and seniors) to $16. The doors open at 7 a.m., and performances finish up at 8 p.m.
Sat., April 16, 7 a.m.-8 p.m., 2011
