Phoenix, a 1-year-old black lab, was set on fire last week. Now, Phoenix's former owner is facing charges of animal cruelty for failing to get the dog immediate medical attention, KCTV5 reported.

Maria Alarcon-Suarez reportedly told police that she found Phoenix "fully engulfed in flames and rolling" in the backyard of her home on East 59th Terrace around 10 p.m. last Thursday. The dog had put out the flames but suffered third-degree burns over 40 percent of his body. Alarcon-Suarez didn't bother to take the dog to the vet until the next afternoon, and when she did, she allegedly claimed that the dog was a stray.

Alarcon-Suarez, 43, was cited for animal cruelty for failing to get help for the dog sooner. Authorities are still looking for the son of a bitch who set the dog on fire. (And this type of cruelty should worry us all, knowing the link between animal abuse and violent criminals.)

Phoenix is now in the care of Love 4 Paws, and they say he's going to need "extensive veterinarian care at a local animal hospital so he can be a happy pup again." Check out their website here to see how you can help.
