The cocktail party, organized by the One By One Project, is from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Leedy-Voulkos Arts Center (2012 Baltimore) tonight. Tickets cost $35 in advance or $40 at the door, and that includes hors d'oeuvres, two drinks and a commemorative glass.

The Upper Crust Pie Bakery is back to doing what it does best: baking pies. After a week's break - Thanksgiving and Christmas were slammed for the local pie shop - the bakery is back with its cookies and many varieties of pies, which are available in two locations. Learn how to make Soups & Stews: Hearty Favorites with chef Tim Hall at the Culinary Center of Kansas City (7920 Santa Fe Dr., Overland Park) on Saturday. Students will learn how to make chili, pasta fagioli and chicken sauce piquant. The three-hour class begins at 10 a.m. and costs $55 per person.
The BadSeed Farmers Market is one of the few places in the city to get locally grown organic produce in the winter. The vendors also stock grass-fed beef, baked goods, cheeses and free-range eggs. The market is held at 1909 McGee from 4 to 8 p.m. Fridays, through the end of February.
