Once known for stockyards and cattle, Kansas City is apparently no longer considered among the great steak cities in the country. USA Today, the paper with vast sports coverage and an unrivaled ability to appear outside your hotel-room door, has named The USA's Best Steakhouse.

Spoiler Alert: It's the Peter Luger Steak House in Brooklyn, New York. And while I can't fault that selection — your steak comes with a side of cholesterol sauce — I am a little disheartened that the panel of 13 food writers, chefs and critics didn't even include a Kansas City joint among the finalists. The best this city could do was to be included in the accompanying poll searching for which city deserved the overall title. (KC is currently tied with New York for second behind Chicago.)

When I asked for a casual recommendation on the best steak in the city when I first moved here five years ago, I was pointed to two (albeit high-end) chains: Plaza III and J. Gilbert's. Over time, I found myself drawn to the living time capsules inside the Golden Ox, Jess & Jim's, and the Savoy Grill.

This city's name will always be on a strip steak. But is Kansas City no longer a great steakhouse city?
