Freebirds World Burrito opens Thursday at 6029 Metcalf in Mission, and the first 25 people in line get free burritos (one a week) for a year.

This is the 74th location for the Austin, Texas-based chain amid a planned Midwest expansion that calls for 27 restaurants in Kansas, Nebraska and Missouri. Construction has already begun on a second area location in the former Chili's at 554 Westport Road in Westport.

Freebirds (which Pitch writer David Hudnall visited in Austin during South By Southwest) has burritos, salads, tacos and nachos. The burritos come in four sizes, ranging from the equivalent of a well-stuffed tamale to the super monster, which resembles a pneumatic tube and can be stuffed with 8 pounds of ingredients. The tortillas are also available in four flavors: flour, spinach, wheat and cayenne.

Freebirds will serve $4 margaritas and beer (Boulevard Wheat, Pale Ale, Bud Light, Bud, Corona, Coors Light, Miller Lite). Happy hour is from 3 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday with two specials: a margarita and nachos for $8 or a beer and nachos for $7.

The new location is hosting a pair of preview parties, today and tomorrow, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. For the first 250 people who donate $5 or more to the Greater Kansas City affiliate of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation, a drink and entree (excluding the monster and super monster burritos) are free.

The Mission restaurant has indoor and outdoor seating and is open from 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday to Thursday, 10:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday.
