When growing up, we often made fun of my father for the longing looks he gave food that was headed to other tables. As a kid, I was embarrassed when my dad would snag a waiter's attention to find out what had just wafted by his nose. Although, to be fair, I was embarrassed more by the potential for embarrassment rather than any actual comments in what was usually a benign restaurant interaction.

As an adult, I'll admit I've come to repeat the sins of my father. I have a natural curiosity about what others are eating, and if I'm in a new place, sometimes moving my eyes around the dining room feels like a method that is as valid as perusing the actual menu. And once in a while, I'll see what looks like a perfectly composed dish and feel remorse that I've already seen our waiter key in a different item for me.
