  • Muddy's was good to the last drop ... on May 27.

A Fat City reader wrote to ask: "I read, in the Kansas City Star, that Muddy's at 318 E. 51st Street was going to be purchased by a couple of employees. But I've looked in the window, and everything in the space is gone. The place is completely empty. If employees were buying the business, wouldn't there be at least a coffee cup left?"

Or so you might think. I had wondered the same thing, so I called Diane Burnette -- who opened the coffeehouse 16 years ago with her husband, Oliver Burnette -- to get the answer. And here it is: The deal's off.  Muddy's is but a fragrant, coffee-scented memory.

"The employees just couldn't get it together," Diane Burnette says. "We hand-held them as long as we could. I gave them a list of the things they needed to do, the people they needed to talk to, the capital they were going to need to start up a business. But they just couldn't get it together.

"We finally closed the business for good on May 27. It was a sad moment for all of us," Diane Burnette says. "We had a farewell gathering at Jack Gage later, and a lot of our customers, employees and former employees stopped by. Muddy's would have been 17 years old in November. We made a lot of friends over those years."
