We'll be making a serious exploration of brunch in next week's Pitch, but just recently discovered a brand new player in this town's brunch game: Leawood's Cafe Roux (11554 Ash, in the Park Place development) began serving brunch last weekend.

It's serving an authentic Southern-style breakfast, according to executive chef Josh Reese. And he should know his southern fare, he says, because he's from southern Missouri.

The brunch menu is served in the restaurant from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays and features two kinds of omelets, a quiche du jour, house-baked biscuits smothered in a fresh cream gravy made with traditional sage-and-rosemary breakfast sausage, and pan purdue -- the original Gallic version of French toast. The most expensive dish on the brunch menu, Reese says, is the $12 plate of steak and eggs: "It's our flat-iron steak with eggs any style and my stuffed hashed browns."

Stuffed hash browns? "Yes, I grill a layer of hash brown potatoes, top this with cream cheese, goat cheese, chives, green onions and cracked black pepper and put another layer of potatoes on top, like a little sandwich."

It all sounds kind of fancy, but Reese insists it's not. "I like my breakfast to be a little bit like the kind served in a greasy spoon," he says. "That means real sausage gravy -- not out of a bag -- on top of real, freshly-baked biscuits made from scratch. I'm talking a little greasy, not Waffle House."

Reese also believes that too many breakfast dishes served in the Kansas City metro are too bland. "I believe in seasoned food," he says.

He's preaching to the choir, as far as I'm concerned. Pass the hot sauce and the pepper mill over here, sugar.
