Sunday breakfast: not too early, not a chain

We love Cascone's Grill, but it's closed Sundays until next spring

Peter works in the restaurant business. That means he works late on most Friday and Saturday nights and likes to sleep late on Sunday mornings. When he wakes up, he and his wife want to go out for breakfast, but they really don't care to dine at the chain operations like Denny's, Perkins or, God forbid, the Cracker Barrel.

"We're looking for an independently owned restaurant that serves breakfast either all day or at least late -- until after 2 or 3 p.m.," says Peter, who also prefers to avoid the after-church crowd. (He deals with enough youngsters during his restaurant shifts).

Peter and his wife live in midtown and recently dined at the newly opened Carly Sue's Diner at 120 East Gregory (they were underwhelmed) and have eaten at Mama's 39th Street Diner several times. But they're looking for new Sunday morning venues. They don't want anything too fancy -- like, say, the Sunday brunch at Bluestem, Grand Street Cafe or Bluebird Bistro -- but more in the style of a classic diner. Chubby's? No.

Here are my choices, but I'm sure Fat City readers will have some terrific suggestions of their own.

5. Cook's Shack Cafe, 8950 Wornall, stays open on Sundays until only 2 p.m., but it does serve breakfast -- hearty, modestly priced breakfasts -- until closing.
4. Niecie's Restaurant, 6441 Troost, serves breakfast all day Sunday -- until the family-owned restaurant closes at 8 p.m. House specialties include fried chicken and waffles.
3. Cozy's Cafe, 6740 West 75th Street in Overland Park. Restaurateur Kozeta Kreka serves Sunday breakfast right up until her restaurant closes at 3 p.m.
2. Succotash, 2601 Holmes. Chef-owner Beth Barden moved her bruncheonette from the City Market to historic Dutch Hill last year, but the big pancakes and generous breakfast dishes came with her.
1. The Corner Cafe, 4541 Northwest Gateway, Riverside. OK, so this diner isn't in midtown, but if you want a leisurely Sunday breakfast instead of dinner (if you sleep really late on Sundays, for example), this diner serves up some fabulous breakfast fare until the restaurant closes at 10 p.m. There are two exceptions, though: Biscuits and gravy and waffles are served only until 11 a.m.
