One of the most beloved soul-food buffets in Kansas City, Papa Lew's Soul Delicious - a culinary icon at 2128 East 12th Street for more than three decades - will close July 7. The owners of the restaurant, Dorriss Lyman (the widow of the restaurant's founder, Lewis Lyman Sr.) and her son, Marvin Lyman, announced the closing on the restaurant's Facebook page yesterday stating that the Lymans are "ready to give up fifteen hour days and little time off."
The Facebook post continues, "Though both are not clear what either will do next, they are certain their impact in the community over the next thirty-one years will be just as great or better."
Fast Pitch contacted Dorriss Lyman at the restaurant today, and she told us, "After 31 and a half years, it was time to give it up."
Lyman says they have no plans to sell the restaurant to another restaurant operator and that the restaurant will continue to operate as it always has until July 7. "Marvin has plans for doing something special on the last day," she says. "But he hasn't even told us all the details yet."
Another soul-food buffet, DelHi's Soul Food Buffet in Kansas City, Kansas, closed a month ago.
