Best Thrift Store

Corner Thrift

Troubled times have fallen upon thrift-store shoppers ever since downtown's Grand Thrift -- with its abundant array of dollar T-shirts -- closed. Filling the void is Corner Thrift. Lacking the musty smell that closes off respiratory systems in many thrift stores, Corner Thrift offers a clean space where shoppers can breathe easy as they browse rack upon rack of clothing, books, curtains and bedspreads. Items are reliably sorted, and aisles are roomy enough that those uncomfortable let-me-squeeze-by moments are few and far between. Most clothing is less than $4 an item, and belts -- which go for a quarter to a dollar each -- are a steal. Books range from the lowbrow (Microwave Cooking Made Easy) to the highbrow (Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart). And anyone in need of a wicker basket or a small tin box is in for a treat. Best of all, the oldies station is on, and many customers sing along -- not in mumbles or repressed hums but in full-on singing voices.
