Best Revival House

Tivoli Cinemas

Most of the Tivoli's programming is first-run, but in the absence of a dedicated revival house in the metro, it also fills a much-needed niche. Among its series in the past year: Film Noir (Les Diaboliques, Night and the City, Ossessione), Summer Musicals (Bells Are Ringing, The King and I, Swing Time) and Leading Ladies of the Silver Screen (Ninotchka, All About Eve, Notorious). August featured a shiny new print of The Red Shoes, and the restored cut of Fritz Lang's Metropolis marked a high in a brilliant silent-movie series in the fall. Tivoli owner Jerry Harrington consistently programs the best art-house and foreign picks in the city, but his dedication to the classics is what allows us to absorb these cinematic beauties the way they were meant to be seen — on the big screen, in a dark theater, alongside an audience of enraptured fellow film lovers. •
