Best Place to Hang Out

Rozelle Court, Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art

Certainly the prettiest spot in Kansas City to sit with a cup of coffee and a pastry, the center courtyard of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art has been a restaurant and gathering place since the former outdoor atrium received a glass ceiling in 1981. Open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesdays through Saturdays (and serving dinner, to the accompaniment of live jazz, Fridays from 5 to 8 p.m.) and Sunday from noon to 3 p.m., the enchanting Rozelle Court, with its bubbling center fountain and glass-topped cafe tables, is not only a wonderful place to eat lunch or dinner, people-watch, and gossip with friends, it's a remarkable place to take a book of poetry and temporarily escape from everything familiar and dreary. Hanging out may be easier on Fridays starting this fall: Entry to the museum will be free, as it already is on Saturdays.
