Waldo Pizza

Yes, there are snazzier pizza joints in town, and cheaper places, and places with more eclectic choices. But for a no-bullshit, no-fuss neighborhood pizza parlor, Phil Bourne's Waldo Pizza has it all over its competition. The 18-year-old pizzeria may lack ambience and can be noisy as hell, but the pizza is consistently delicious, and the service is almost always attentive and friendly. There aren't many specialty pies, but the three crust options -- traditional; St. Louis-style thin crust; and chewy, thick, honey-wheat -- encourage diners to custom-design pizzas from an interesting collection of ingredients. Why settle for cheese and pepperoni when a more exotic Gorgonzola, Spam and sauerkraut pizza is possible? The salad bar is extensive, and four of its dressings are homemade. Bourne's entire menu is economical enough that regulars have been known to show up five or six times a week. And they'll even admit it!
