Best Murder on Stage

Work Song: Three Views of Frank Lloyd Wright

At the end of the first act of the Rep's Work Song: Three Views of Frank Lloyd Wright, director and coauthor Eric Simonson staged the horrific arson murder of Wright's mistress and seven others so simply and creatively, it was more frightening than if he'd depicted the killings literally. Simonson placed the assailant next to a dollhouse-sized replica of the Wright compound, then had him set the model ablaze. After the crime, he squeezed himself into a Wright-inspired box that had risen out of the floor and then disappeared -- presumably into the bowels of hell. It's what the term coup de théâtre was invented for.
