Strasser Hardware has been selling hammers, nails and potbellied stoves since 1917, even before the surrounding city of Rosedale was annexed to Kansas City, Kansas. After 88 years, the two-story Strasser's still sells hammers, nails and potbellied stoves, along with plenty of other vitally important hardware needs: paint, rodent traps, dog shampoo, toilet seats (and toilets), birdseed and Kool-Aid stands. Customers travel from all over the metro to have keys made, rent cotton-candy machines, get advice on fixing leaks, or dash up to the second-floor housewares section for a vacuum or a stew pot. The staff members are a lot friendlier than their counterparts at the big-box stores -- and easier to find, too. And Strasser's may be the only hardware store in the city that gives its patrons fresh, free popcorn.
