Best Crushworthy Artist

Justin Gainan

Justin Gainan, a 2004 graduate of the Kansas City Art Institute, is one of the youngest artists to win a coveted Charlotte Street Award in the foundation's 10-year history. His prints of silk knitting, installations of piled wood and rayograms of discarded thread all explore connectivity; more recent drawings -- particularly a series called Dot Portraiture, in which he never looks at the paper while working -- suggest fatalism. He says he's now moving one step closer to a complete lack of composition, rendering chaos. While we have full confidence in his artistic capabilities (much of his work is quite beautiful), it seems possible that Justin might endearingly be in need of spiritual direction. Given that he's 6-feet-2, famously considerate and in possession of a very admirable jaw, we suspect he'll have no trouble finding a guide.
