Stuart Hinds

Drab gray boxes line the perimeter of the special-collections vault at UMKC's Miller Nichols Library. But inside one of the boxes lives a small but growing collection with a little more dazzle. The ravishingly named GLAMA — Gay and Lesbian Archive of Mid-America — collects Kansas City's LGBT history. Stuart Hinds, head of special collections at the library, began amassing the contents of that box less than a year ago, and his gathering of oral histories and gay memorabilia goes on. Hinds hopes that the acquisition will inspire area gay youth to learn about their rich and varied local heritage. From the old costumes of famed drag queen Melinda Ryder to the recorded tales of those who watched friends die during the AIDS epidemic, this is history that likely would have been lost without Hinds.
