Abstract Ploys

Larry Thomas, Johnson County Community College's art department chairman, paints remarkable abstractions that resolve into new levels of detail the closer one gets to the canvases, almost like computer-generated fractals. In fact, Thomas deploys digital techniques in his multimedia work, but the overall effect of his extremely kinetic art is painterly. Some works suggest hyper-dimensional architecture, combining swirls of paint with precisely drawn gridwork and carefully rendered geometric forms. The effect is animate, sometimes even monstrous. Thomas' sensibility is distinctive and immediately recognizable; it's hard to picture another artist successfully imitating his style. He has been exhibiting in Kansas City since the 1990s. Today, the Kansas City Jewish Museum of Contemporary Art opens Larry Thomas: Ploys and Decoys at the Epsten Gallery at Village Shalom (5500 West 123rd Street, Overland Park, 913-266-8413), with a public reception from 2 to 4 p.m. and a talk by Thomas at 3 p.m. in the Village Shalom social hall.
