Kansas City Mayor Sly James has offically declared Saturday, August 9, as "Air Guitar Day" in Kansas City. There was a fancy proclamation and James even rocked out and the good folks in Finland even took notice. For real.

That's because on Saturday, for the first time in 11 years, Kansas City hosts the U.S. Air Guitar National Finals at the Midland (1228 Main). The best faux guitar players in the nation — such as Tyranicus, Lord of the End Times; Airistotle; the Shred; and KC’s own CorpAIRation — are each vying for a golden ticket to the World Championships in Oulu, Finland.

But first, U.S. Air Guitar throws a dark-horse competition tonight at a yet-to-be-named but prominent Kansas City gay bar. It's a last gasp for air guitarists to play their way into Saturday's show. We're told to keep watch of U.S. Air Guitar's Twitter page for the location. Showtime is 8 p.m.

Saturday's finals at the Midland gets started with Me Like Bees. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. Shenanigans to follow, including a special performance by World Champion (and Kansas Citian) Eric "Mean" Melin.
