The first Andy's Frozen Custard opened in 1986, at the Lake of the Ozarks. Since then, the company has expanded into several other states (Oklahoma, Illinois, Arkansas, Texas), totaling 22 shops in all. Its president, Andy Kuntz, grew up around these parts - "I was baptized at Christ the King, I still keep a residence in KC, and I'm a Chiefs season ticket holder," he says - and sometime this fall, he'll open the first KC-area Andy's Frozen Custard.

"Barring any major catastrophe," he says, there'll be shovels in the ground by mid-May at the intersection of Westport Road and Mercer, on a lot currently occupied by auto-repair shop Terry's Westport Services. He hopes to open for business sometime in August.

"We wanted it to be a KCMO proper address," Kuntz says. "And we like that Westport is an older part of Kansas City, with a lot of traffic and high density."

Andy's specializes in custard-based concretes, malts and sundaes. Menu items here.
