He has spent the past several months attempting to be the first person to earn a plate at the new Flying Saucer (900 Spruce) only a block from Busch Stadium in the River City. His plan was to dedicate said plate to umpire Don Denkinger (best known for this call in the intrastate World Series). In order to do this, one must drink 200 beers. Now, because this is St. Louis, several locals attempted to derail his plans this Saturday. And because this is St. Louis, they failed.
As the Riverfront Times reported, Hoffmann earned the plate this weekend after besting four St. Louis-ites in a series of four elimination competitions set up by the brew bar. Hoffmann proved his skills at trivia, flip cup, coaster towers and remembering the beers he has drank along his journey (here's a piece by St. Louis magazine from the middle of the quest). At the end, the challengers could only sit and watch as he filled out the first plate application at the Flying Saucer. And now Denkinger will once again have a home plate in St. Louis.
