Just as bacon is the gateway drug for carnivores, Rawxies may become part of the germination for the vegan movement in Kansas City. The heart-shaped cookies that exist in the space between food bar and dessert are a KC product created by Callie England. In a nice counterpoint, the raw, vegan, gluten- and soy-free cookies are made in an East Bottoms space just a few blocks from the Local Pig.

The name Rawxies (a combination of raw and foxy) was trademarked two years ago by England, and her cookie company relaunched last month with three flavors: mint chocolate chip, banana nut bread and lemon poppy seed. A package (stocked by Cosentino's, Hy-Vee, Market 3 and Howard's Organic Fare) retails for $2.50, and each contains two cookies the size of very large strawberries.

I have high praise for the banana nut bread Rawxies. The oat-based cookie, like a warm bowl of oatmeal, works well with the cinnamon and vanilla that infuse each bite. And unlike some vegan desserts, there's not a clumpy or heavy feel. Texturally, Rawxies are like cousins to coconut macaroons. England's motto is that she wants you to "stop eating crap," and these cookies are a testament that vegans and those seeking gluten-free desserts don't have to settle.
