Riederer, a former Jackson County prosecutor and legislator, ran for mayor in 2007 (finishing third behind Alvin Brooks and the eventual winner, Mark Funkhouser). He had a long legal career in the city.
A political force involved in the Save our Stadiums and Kansas City Zoo expansion campaigns, Riederer was also a judge on Missouri's Western District Court of Appeals. He's survived by his wife, Jackson County Circuit Judge Sandra Midkiff.
Jackson County Executive Mike Sanders released the following statement Thursday afternoon:
"Today, we lost a truly great human being. Albert dedicated much of his life and career to helping improve the lives of others. His contributions as an elected official, civic leader, and mentor are still felt today. As Jackson County Prosecutor, he set an example for all other prosecutors to follow. Although he is no longer with us, Albert's spirit will live on, both in the people he touched and in the community that he cared so deeply about."
In honor of Riederer, flags at all county buildings are being flown at half-staff.
