Books & Butchers and other weekend possibilities

It sounds like a children’s book, but there will be a pig, for real, in the Johnson County Central Resource Library (9875 W. 87th St., Overland Park) Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. That’s when the Local Pig conducts a butchering demonstration on a half hog as part of a Books & Butchers talk. While owner Alex Pope breaks down the pig, he’ll also talk about local products and sustainable farming practices.

If you want to stay warm, you’ve got to learn how to drink strong ale. Test your fortitude at Beer KC’s Strong Ale Festival (on Pennsylvania Avenue in Westport, between Kelly’s and McCoy’s) on Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m. With three dozen breweries participating (Perennial Artisan Ales, Avery, and Six Row among them), you’ll choose from a strong field of beers with an alcohol by volume of 8 percent or greater. Tickets are $30 in advance or $35 at the door.

Prefer your wine with a bit of walking? The 14th Street Wine Walk, a benefit for the Sertoma Society of Kansas City, is Saturday from 3 to 6 p.m. Munch on small plates and sample 2-ounce glasses of wine at six different venues in the Power & Light District (Maker’s Mark, Drunken Fish, Bar Louie, the Kill Devil Club, the Garment District and Bristol Seafood Grill). At the end of the walk, grab a complimentary glass of your favorite wine from one of the six venues. Tickets are $25 and include a souvenir glass.

The squirrel that’s eating his way through the jack-o-lantern on your front porch is an amateur. The real pros are at the Kansas City Zoo. The zoo’s annual Great Pumpkin Smash, in which zoo staff give the animals pumpkins to eat and destroy at will, is Saturday. The smash starts at 10 a.m., and Nikita the polar bear gets a crack at the orange globes at 3 p.m. The event is included with your paid admission.

Forget sitting back on the couch with a big glass of red wine. What you need is smoked brisket and Malbec — that’s the third course at the Trivento Wine Dinner at Julian on Monday. Chicken liver pate, slow-roasted and smoked salmon with a garbanzo-bean stew, and goat-cheese cheesecake with coconut-lime caramel round out the four-course dinner with wine pairings.
