Forget champagne. The way to properly celebrate an anniversary is with beer. Barley's Brewhaus (11924 West 119th Street, Overland Park) turns 17 this week and has a series of beer-based festivities.

The latest Beer School class is tonight at 6 p.m. The focus is the Schlafly Brewery, out of St. Louis. Students will sample the Bourbon Barrel Imperial Stout, Pumpkin Ale, Barleywine and Biere De Garde, as well as a mystery beer. Tickets cost $8 and must be purchased in advance. You can call 913-663-4099 to reserve a spot. If you don't want to plan ahead, all local mugs of beer are $3.

On Wednesday, the Brewhaus is tapping a Summit Saga firkin at 5 p.m. and has $3 IPAs. On Thursday, they'll haul out local brews from Boulevard, Free State, Tallgrass, 75th Street and Mother's. And on Saturday, canned beer will only set you back $2.50. A complete list of the week's events is here.

Grinders isn't having an anniversary, but they do have a beer tasting worthy of celebration. Stretch, Jeff Rumaner, will be creating a menu paired to beers from Mother's Brewing for a tasting Tuesday, October 9, at 7 p.m.Tickets are $35 in advance, $40 at the door.
