On the eve of The Pitch's 2010 "Best of Kansas City" issue next

week, we thought it would be entertaining and revealing to take a

backward glance at some of our past winners. Who's still on top? Which

restaurants and bakeries had their 15 minutes of fame and are barely

remembered today?

Sweets -- fancy desserts, breakfast pastries, humble pies -- have always been a tradition in our "Best of Kansas City" issues. Looking back at past award winners, though, it's sad to see that at least a couple of bakeries didn't make it through the last decade.

The Pastry Goddess, our 2005 honoree, and Artisan Francais, which won the Best Bakery award the following year, are both out of business. The good news is that pastry chef James Holmes moved his Napoleon Bakery into the long-vacant Artisan Francais space this year.

And what about some of our past Best Dessert winners? We still miss the glorious pastries created by 2006 winner Wendy Rudderforth for the tiny 39th Street bistro Pangea Cafe & Market, which closed a couple of years later. Happily, another past winner, the M&S Grill, is still putting out a delectable dessert tray, just as it did when it was honored for Best Desserts in 2005. And our 2002 winner, Wally's Pastry Shop, is still creating sinfully sweet masterpieces north of the river. That same year we honored chef Jasper Mirabile Jr. with Best Decadent Dessert for the Strawberry Borghese Cake at Jasper's Restaurant.

Other past tributes include the 2007 honors for the Best Sticky Bun at Chacko's Bakery in Mission (it's now called Chacko's Eatery and recently moved just west of its old location) and all the delectable desserts at Andre's Confiserie Suisse, which got our vote for Best Pastries in 2007. We recently raved about one of the signature sweets here: the Matterhorn. Like all of our favorite desserts featured in The Pitch, it's a peak experience.
